Play Therapy
The Association For Play Therapy, describes this treatment modality as:
“the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained Play Therapists use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychosocial difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.”
Who can provide Play Therapy?
It should only be provided by licensed mental health professionals with specialized play therapy education, training and supervised experience.
Our licensed mental health counselor and registered play therapist, Nikeda Burphy, has these credentials and experience. She connects with children of all ages using the language they speak best…PLAY!
How is Play Therapy different from traditional therapy?
In talk therapy, children may have difficulty expressing their emotions as well as understanding their feelings. Play Therapy allows children to explore their feelings and struggles in a tangible way. Toys, games, and pretend play can be used to act out situations and problem solving in a way that kids can understand most effectively.
This modality is especially helpful for children who have difficulty expressing themselves verbally. Many children who have apraxia, speech and language delays, autism, down syndrome and other developmental challenges can benefit from play therapy.
What are the benefits of Play Therapy?
Through play therapy, children can:
- learn how to manage their behavior
- develop problem solving skills
- understand, process and express feelings
- communicate appropriately with others
- learn turn-taking skills
- develop empathy and relationship skills
